Parhelia - First Light Review

by Sherrill Fulghum

.
"First Light" is the third EP by the quartet from Dublin, Ireland known as Parhelia. The term Parhelia is a real word, not something that was invented. The term is the plural for panhelion - a word from the world of science meaning bright spots found on either side of the sun. Parhelia keeps with the idea of the sun on the album with the name "First Light" and the artwork on the album cover using photos that were taken at the crack of dawn - first light. But this symmetry gives no indication of what the listener will find inside this five song EP.

Parhelia is a band who plays instrumental music that can best be described as new age rock - new age music only played on electric guitars. Their music is similar to that played by Canadian bands Madrid and A Northern Chorus. Parhelia's music is the interesting and smooth chord progression found in new age music, only a little edgier. It's the rockers version of chillin' out music.
