The Greatest Metal Songs of All Time

This week Vh1 is airing their 40 Greatest Metal Songs of All Time special. Some of the picks are leaving us scratching our heads instead of banging our heads, so in an effort to understand how these lists are brought about we asked our crew and our metal hearted brethren over at antiMusic to come up with their lists of the Greatest Metal Songs of All Time. Instead of one master list, this week we will be posting a few of the individual lists each day that will show not only different tastes of metal heads but Korn-free lists that are made by people with a real love for metal not just industry insiders.  The result is the conclusion that metal means different things to different people and that's what makes it the Greatest form of music of all time!

Today we have lists from Anuj and DeadSun. Check back tomorrow for three new lists from the crew.

Anuj

Black Sabbath - Symptom of the Universe (thrash before there was thrash)

Black Sabbath - N.I.B. (this song is what always comes to my mind when I think Black Sabbath)

Botch - To Our Friends in the Great White North (a precursor to a lot of math/metal/core, such as DEP)

Converge - The Saddest Day (their most anthemic song)

Emperor - I Am The Black Wizards (I agree with Mark)

Faith No More - Surprise! You're Dead (first thought was Epic, but I like this track much more)

Immortal - Cursed Realms of the Winterdemons (my new fav black metal band)

In Flames - Moonshield (peak of the Gothenburg sound)

Iron Maiden - Hallowed be thy name (no need to explain, I hope)

Megadeth - Rattlehead (a song ABOUT metal)

Melvins - Revolve (the track that could have been a single)

Metallica - Disposable Heroes (my fav Metallica song)

Napalm Death - Breed To Breathe (my fav ND track)

Opeth - Black Rose Immortal (truly epic)

Obituary - Chopped in Half (fine Florida DM, very representative of that sound)

SYL - All Hail The New Flesh (brutal as f*ck, Devin needs a spot on here)

DeadSun

Anthrax - Caught in a Mosh

Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be They Name, or Die With Your Boots On

Judas Priest - Green Manalishi (yeah, I know it's a cover, but it's still the nuts)

Carcass - Corporal Jigsore Quandry (obscure fact--- this song features the greatest riff with a distortion pedal ever written)

Motorhead - (Ace of Spades my eye!) How about something like Killed by Death, No Class, or Snaggletooth

Dio - Rainbow In The Dark & Don't Talk To Strangers ( The Grand Poobah nailed it. )

Quiet Riot - Metal Health (Classic. Just... classic. )

Ozzy Osbourne - Little Dolls

Pantera - By Demons be Driven

Alice Cooper - No More Mr. Nice Guy

KISS - God of Thunder

Metallica - Creeping Death

Mercyful Fate - Curse of the Pharaoh

Misfits - Green Hell

Obituary - Cause of Death (the song, not the entire disc)

Death - Pull the Plug

Venom - In League With Satan

Immortal - Antartica

Opeth - Demon of the Fall

Darkthrone - In the Shadow of the Horns

Megadeth - Mechanix ( A big "hell yes" to Jofo for her pick. Exquisite choice, madame.)

Helloween - I Want Out

Mastodon - Heart's Alive

Black Sabbath - Symptom of the Universe (the first thrash riff ever written, seriously)
