Necrodeath - The 7 Deadly Sins Review

Necrodeath has little left to prove with "The 7 Deadly Sins." Certainly the album does not widely expand upon the evils of this cult band, responsible for several very fine offerings and some of the most criminally underrated records in the metal realm. But for Necrodeath, knocking on the door of three decades at this point, the ability to heave up a firm product makes them the exception, as most of their aged cohorts have struggled to either induce a proper return or maintain consistency. "The 7 Deadly Sins" is, needless to say, as tight and fulfilling a record as Necrodeath's knowledge and abilities within the sector of their black/death/thrash metal style will allow. It's fairly standard stuff, nothing pushing the creative limits of this texture, yet a worthwhile offering meeting the quality standards within the bulk of Necrodeath's works.The seven songs (did the title give that away?) are within the perimeters of the average black/death/thrash metal project, meaning the projected outcome is precisely the result. Necrodeath's bag of tricks is more or less supplemented by the proper arrangement of riffs and pieces that aren't necessarily unique or captivating when isolated, but under the proper direction, they gain noteworthy momentum. Each sin is frenzied, psychotic, precise, tight, and fully developed in its own unique manner, although the band's motifs often receive varying degrees of exposure. Death metal riffs and the frequent mid-paced sections of "Lust" contradict the feverish thrash parts and wild fluctuations of "Envy," for example, which are both cooked naturally. "The 7 Deadly Sins" is Necrodeath in 2014 sticking to what Necrodeath does best. I find it hard to not like the group despite the predictability within. Slayer-esque solos and the razor-sharp barks are welcoming against the ripping riffs unleashing worlds of havoc beneath the soil-leveling the heavens seems like Necrodeath's objective. This is a concept album, obviously, and while the tracks themselves are decent, I could do without the lyrics. "Gluttony," especially, has the silliest chorus I've heard in some time ("I'M SO HUNGRRYYY!"), bordering on the edge of comical. Little bits of inconsistency pop up, but "The 7 Deadly Sins" is mostly a proper reflection of Necrodeath's impressive lifespan and body of work. Can't say they've been greedy or gluttonous for the easy way out, and that is definitely something to envy.
