Those Who Bring the Torture - Tank Gasmask Ammo Review

by Mark Hensch

.
Tank Gasmask Ammo is an album which reaffirms the powerful violence of death metal and grind. Over the course of its thirty nine minutes, Ammo flies through 13 slamming anthems about violence, war, drinking, sex, and more violence. This whole process is done with fiendishly catchy yet brutal riffs, blistering drums, and face-caving rhythm. Topping it off is the band's putrid production, the likes of which is loud and in-your-face while maintaining a filthy atmosphere.

It is perhaps this abattoir aura which makes Ammo such a wicked album. TWBTT have no qualms with switching from airtight technicality to straightforward, atavistic brutality and back again. The end result is an album which – despite its relative brevity – exudes an air of freshness amidst its dank, putrid contents.

And make no mistake, Ammo is a grimy album. Diabolical movie samples pop up frequently, the band inserting them deep within their mechanical slaughter. Everything is precise, efficient, and brutal, the CD never lapsing into areas outside the band's strengths. "Napalm God," for example, takes a toxic rhythm and fuses it with punk-leaning grindcore for a sickening finish. "Mutant Slut," meanwhile, builds itself out of a driving assault into a frantic moment of mania complete with blistering drums and stuttering guitars. In contrast to this stands "All Hail the Goat (Lord of Great Mutation)," a mid-paced meat grinder featuring haunting melodies amidst the chugging, otherworldly breakdowns. After this, "When Humans and Axes Collide" careens by with caustic death metal and all manner of headbanging riffs. For its part, "Upon the Bonethrone" continues this trend with confident and crushing riffs, the likes of which leads into a smooth set of noxious grooves.

The end result of such brief, spastic depravity is a disc both entertaining and brisk. Ammo attacks with the speed of blitzkrieg and the strength of a nuclear bombing, its speediness matched only by its wanton destruction. In case one cannot tell, this is just the kind of frantic bloodshed that any true death metal or grind aficionado will appreciate.
