Vader - Lead Us!!! EP Review

by Mark Hensch

.
Polish death metal standard-bearers Vader grind on much like the diabolical war-machines they often sing of---there's just no stopping this ferocious foursome. Though their last full-length was 2006's Impressions in Blood, the death metal squad have remained mighty prolific in the meantime, busting out a DVD filmed on location in Poland's capital of Warsaw and a vicious single in V. 666. Now with new material looming on the horizon, the band have attacked with a gracious EP/DVD of new material and crisply rendered music videos.

Entitled Lead Us, the EP portion features four ripping new death metal anthems showcasing Vader's face rearranging mix of subtle symphonic effects, grooving thrash influences, and overarching, rabid brutality.

First cut and title track "Lead Us!!!" kicks into high-gear off an epic Middle-Eastern tinged melody and gradually exploding guitars. The thrashing pummel that follows is new-age Vader---fast but with a masterful sense of groove. Shredding guitar histrionics, bone-shattering breakdowns, and thundering percussion are also the name of the game, all backing frontman Piotr "Peter" Wiwczarek commanding bark. Gruff, Eastern European, and fierce, the man's vocals are stronger than ever.

"The Book" strolls calmly out of the aforementioned brutality with a grandiose orchestral sample soon bombarded with galloping riffs and with all the blunt force of a swinging mace. When the centerpiece riff kicks in, prepare to have your face sandblasted off by churning fury, Arabic percussion rhythms, and guitar licks that show where Behemoth got their recent death metal discipleship from. This is by far the best song on the EP.

"Die!!! (Gin Psie)" begins off more orchestral swells, only to plunge headfirst into a speedy death/thrash metal anthem that flies by. Some surprisingly up-tempo guitar solos aside, this is upper-echelon death metal consisting of nothing but blasphemous aggression, absurd BPM rates, and mind-numbingly precise technicality. I can safely say stuff like this will please Vader fans awaiting a new full-length album.

The EP closes with a cover of Slayer's classic "Reign in Blood." Though there is nothing wrong with this in terms of either atmosphere or performance, I can't help but feel that some things really are too sacred for anyone else to touch. For me personally, "Reign in Blood" can only be played by Slayer and still have that same power to it. Regardless, this is as sound a cover of the song as one is likely to find, and it definitely isn't a butcher of the original by any stretch of the imagination.

Sadly I'm not sure I can offer even those levels of minimal praise to the majority of the videos offered here on the bonus DVD. Three videos are offered here---2005's "This is the War," 2006's "Helleluyah!!! (Gods is Dead)" and 2007's "Sword of the Witcher." And, to be blunt, only one of them is any good.

"This is the War" is a futuristic thrash blitzkrieg and a great song; sadly, the video itself is a pointless but shiny computer-animated battle between opposing cyborg factions. With no real relation to the music at hand, a stupid climax, and "ultra-violence" obviously tailored for primetime music video rotation this one falls flat.

Thank the forces of darkness then for "Helleluyah!!!(God is Dead)," which is probably one of the most wicked music videos I've seen in ages. The song seesaws between sinister, leering slow verses and whirlwind choruses that stutter and howl with blastbeats and growls; set to a symbolic, creepy, and heavily anti-religious video interjected with amble footage of the band rocking a warehouse, "Helleluyah!" is the cream of the video crop for sure.

Sadly, "Sword of the Witcher" isn't. In fact, it is probably more middling. The song itself is a bit underwhelming, slow-paced death metal being awkwardly combined with bland Dimmu Borgir symphonic effects. Vader rocking a flaming castle in the dark is cool, but frequent clips of game play footage from some poor fantasy videogame take the intensity down a notch. To sum it up, the whole thing coalesces into a sort of media "blah," uninspiring in its insipid decency.

Don't let my venom for the videos turn you off though. Though short, sweet, and to-the-point, this EP features some slamming songs and videos (like them or not) that are novel in concept and well-shot to boot. This is a good place to see where Vader has been heading for a while if you're new to the band or if you're not it should tide you over until the next release. Lead Us into the future indeed!
