Demon Hunter - Storm the Gates of Hell Review

by Dave Jordan

.
I have to admit when I first sat down to check this record out that I was taken by surprise by what I heard. I was expecting something with lots of choruses and singing, with sad attempts at recreating the heaviness this band had when they first started. But once the title track "Storm the Gates of Hell" started blaring from my speakers, I knew I had Demon Hunter pegged totally wrong. This album showcases all facets of the band's style, from the heavy ("Storm the Gates of Hell" and "A Thread of Light") to the not so heavy ("Carry Me Down" and "Fading Away"). The album also features songs that are a mix between the two ("Lead Us Home"), which in my opinion are the best songs on the record. In this way, the record is similar to Demon Hunter's more recent projects (read: The Triptych), except the band explores the more extreme elements of their sound on this record than on the slightly older ones, which is reminiscent of their self-titled debut on Solid State Records.

The production quality, meanwhile, is excellent: The mix is clear, while the musical and vocal tracks are well done. The way the album transitions between songs is good as well, with static and feedback at certain points which lend a nice pace to the album. Both the instruments and the vocals are evenly balanced between the melodic and the metallic, which helps keep things interesting since the band is good at doing both. All things considered, this is a solid release that showcases a side of Demon Hunter newer fans might not be familiar with; this is sure to please the new fans and the old fans alike.

For Fans of: Slipknot, Disturbed and Godsmack.
