Thoughts of Ionesco - The Scar Is Our Watermark Review

by Mike Rapin

.
Spewing vomit that is the music of some insane breed, Thoughts of Ionesco kicks in the door with their release The Scar Is Our Watermark. When I first listened to this album, I was f***ing scared. I had no idea where this band was coming from nor where the CD was going, but I made damn well sure that I listened to the entire CD, and it was a good thing I did.

From start to finished I was confused on whether or not the band was aiming at making a harmonized sound or an off tone sound. The CD varies from happy to crazed while still keeping a very good-bad sound filled in by the scream of a tormented man.

A lot of the CDs guitar parts remind me of a more metal sounding Rage Against The Machine (but that could just be me), but still a killtastic instrumental side of the band making The Scar Is Our Watermark so f**king incredible you would want to take on the Hulk...the grey Hulk. Honestly, this CD has such great musical parts they are incomparable to anything. The varying sound and feel of every song just makes things so great. It's as if you think you have a feel on the band, then you hear the next song on the CD and are forced to punch your own head because you realize how wrong you were just minutes before.

Lyrically, this CD made no sense to me. I believe I would have to listen to this CD hundreds of times to fully grasp everything amassed in this album.

Now, as I search Google/Wikipedia for random facts on this band, I see that they were formed in Detroit, MI, of all places and with members joining other bands like The Suicide Machines, The Alkaline Trio, The Holy Fire, and Paradise. This album doesn't really show how these members could go on to such different genres of music... honestly.

I'll say that this album constantly made me say, "What the hell?" And even still after listening to the CD many times I still ask that question... but for a good reason.
