Lima Charlie - It's Easy To Be Creepy Review

Lima Charlie is a wonderful band, although it's impossible to accurately categorize them. Vocalist Pete Van Leeuwen is sometimes a dead ringer for the endearingly ragged Shane (The Pogues) MacGowan. But while there are plenty of ethnic musical elements found on It's Easy To Be Creepy, The Pogue's Irish -- by way of England -- isn't one of them.
These songs are continuously socially challenging, too. One titled "Disease Parade", for instance, imagines what it would be like to trade various illnesses on the open market, whereas "Cafι Con Piernas" seemingly speaks about a sex change candidate. Lima Charlie is obviously unafraid to look into the dark side.
Musically, this disc is one of those everything-but-the-kitchen sink jobs. One hears banjo, Wurlitzer, charango (whatever that is), and toy piano, along with the standard rock (guitar, bass, drums) elements. Styles are also all over the map. For example, reggae chugs in and out of "Menopause Graduate", which bemoans the end of motherhood. "No more pancakes to make," it announces, before coupling that line with, "and no more babies."
Lima Charlie doesn't match any stylistic category. But then again, Lima Charlie doesn't need no stinkin' category.
