The Dear and Departed - Something Quite Peculiar Review

The Dear and Departed are a band that have many places they can go. On their album "Something Quite Peculiar", the band creates a decent album for fans of The Cure, AFI, and Thursday. Some songs sound rather contrived and forced, but in large part the album as a whole is worth while. Blending influences from the aforementioned bands and some catch hooks, the band should be a hit after a little more polish.
The record starts off with "And We Begin
", a haunting song that features chanting and a thundering bass line and then launches into "I Will Love Again" which has starts out slow and melodic before heading into a huge chorus. "Masquerade" is a perfect blend of AFI and the Cure and even a little sound of Kaddisfly. "Fly Me Away" and "Tonight's the Night" show the band moving more towards the sound of Thursday or Rise Against, keeping the melody while being able to create something aggressive.
While the album isn't perfect and some songs sound geared more towards the fans of bands like Panic at the Disco and Fall Out Boy, there are many redeeming qualities to their songs. Most of the album has songs that have big choruses and memorable lyrics as well as decent musicianship. They have a lot of potential and will hopefully find their full sound soon.
