Silverstein - Arrivals and Departures Review

by Matthew Hastie

.
There's been a lot of talk lately that the post hardcore / metalcore / scremo / mallcore / whatever genre you want to call them are dying out. While people might be losing interest or not buying records anymore that doesn't mean that there aren't still good records to be found out there. Silverstein has been around for a while now with two albums and a retrospective of the early years under their belt, but the band is far from dying out. Their newest venture, "Arrivals and Departures" is a solid example of why the death of these genres might only be because the 14 year old emo kids with ADHD aren't buying CDs anymore. The band sounds better than ever and the genre is still going strong.

If you've been a Silverstein fan for a while then you won't find yourself lost with "Arrivals and Departures", it still features great musical parts and catchy choruses. If you aren't a Silverstein fan but listen to the aforementioned genres you will feel right at home. The only problem with the hardcore scene is that it is getting a little stagnant and that's as well the only problem with this CD, it's nothing terribly new. That withstanding though the album is quite diverse and flows well from songs that hardcore fans will embrace and songs that could be very MTV or radio friendly.

The album starts out nice and hard with "Sound of the Sun" which you could say is the bread and butter of hardcore songs, though that doesn't make it bad. It's definitely a great place to start the album with due to its familiarity. One of the best songs on the album is "If You Could See Into My Soul" that begins with a heavy electronic beat and that continues into a rather heavy song. The guitars, drums, and vocals are right on in this song though the bass is a tad faint. With an electronic song it never hurts to pump the bass up a little bit more. Other stand out tracks include the ballad "Worlds Apart", "The Sand Will Turn to Glass", "Here Today Gone Tomorrow", and album closer "True Romance". If you're into Silverstein or even just the post hardcore genre check out "Arrivals and Departures".
