Mustard Plug - In Black and White Review

by Mike Rapin

.
Down-beat guitars? Check.
Horns? Check.
Walking bass lines? Check.
Catchy choruses? Check.

Mustard Plug is back. Really, they're back. And boy have they brought the fun. Grand Rapids, Michigan's own Mustard Plug is one of those bands I am a huge fan of. It's that fun kind of ska any fan of punk and ska listens to when wanting to have a feel good time and skank around with your friends. With their newest album In Black and White, the fun continues with more punk influences.

My first thought when I heard this album was, "Hell yes." I jumped into this album after having listened to "Mr. Smiley" and "We're Gunna Take On The World" thinking that things were going to be the same lively fun that any fan of Mustard Plug would expect. I was reassured as each song stuck its verse and I could easily stand up to skank. And the horns; Oh the horns! As expected, the horn section of Mustard Plug is full throughout In Black and White. Topped off with those catchy choruses that I mentioned you can only expect gold from this album.

Seriously, these guys know how to write songs that stay in your head. After my first listen to this album, nearly half of the songs were playing in my mind throughout the day. I'll just say this: it's the combination of that ever-loved ska guitar and horn combination. And don't forget the greatly written choruses. Did I mention the songs were catchy?

Now, go get on your checkered shoes and your black rimmed glasses and go pick up this album. Mustard Plug has been around for over 15 years and they still know how to put out a great album. This is probably one the best ska albums I've heard all year and I'd definitely recommend it to any and all fans of punk and/or ska. So seriously, go get it.
