Halloween Soundtrack Review

by Patrick Muldowney

.
If you need someone to make you a really good mix CD of mostly Classic Rock music, Rob Zombie is the man to seek. I'm not sure whether to give him credit for much more on the Halloween soundtrack, but I'll go with my experiences viewing his previous movies. House of 1000 Corpses would not have been nearly the movie it was without the soundtrack. Zombie most resembles the early German filmmakers in his style, which makes for extraordinary film, but limited dialogue. After all, most of the movies I'm referring to were silent movies (or nearly silent…M). Modern viewers expect much more sonically, so Zombie has made a habit of using his music expertise to create effective moments in film, much like a horror genre Tarentino.

Without having watched his remake of Halloween, an already great film, the inclusion of tracks like Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way", Nazareth's "Love Hurts", and Nan Vernon's "Mr. Sandman" on the soundtrack, leads me to believe Zombie has once again bloodied songs that seem more suited for the romantic, party nostalgia of Dazed and Confused. This is what I expect, and part of the reason I prefer Rob Zombie when it comes to the graphically darker side of filmmaking. It is refreshing to have effective irony. First you're shocked at how anyone could think of using such a song at such a moment, and then you realize it works. Like any formula, this may become predictable, but, to this point, I look forward to being appalled, then having Zombie toss in an American lullaby to remind this is a form of art, and he is the conductor.

Without viewing the film, the Halloween soundtrack is a classic mix with terrifying (and humorous) sound bites interspersed, but I'm sure that after viewing the film, the soundtrack becomes a memory of a motion picture experience.

Tracks added to iPod: (Don't Fear) The Reaper, Love Hurts, Baby I Love Your Way (Live), "A Taco Deluxe Supreme", 1969, Only Women Bleed, "Was That the Boogieman?", "The Scream", Mr. Sandman
