Bobaflex - Tales From Dirt Town Review

by J Simpson

.
I'm sure everyone has heard about the legendary dispute between the 2 southern families The Hatfield & The McCoys. The feud started in the late 1800's and I believe if I remember right they finally agreed to sign a treaty ending the disagreement just a few years ago. What does that have to do with a music review you ask, well the band I have the pleasure of reviewing today was started in 1998 by Martin and Shaun McCoy, descendants from that famous feud. They named the band Bobaflex and eventually put out their debut disc in 2003 and then under a new label (TVT Records) came their second offering in 2005. Now on Oct. 30 they plan on delivering their latest assault on the rock n roll music scene, a disc named Tales From Dirt Town.

What kind of music would you expect to hear coming out of a small rural town in W. Virginia? Probably not the hard core rock music that Bobaflex showcases on this disc of 12 smack you in the face tracks. Not quite as metal as their first 2 albums, Bobaflex has created a more dynamic harmonious record that may give them that edge to standout and demand recognition. The lead track titled Sellout starts off with adrenalin pumping rhythm and pounding drums that harkens of an Avenge Sevenfold or Sevendust tune and is definitely one of the hardest songs on the disc. The second track is not quite as hard but just as damaging, its more riff oriented yet still fast and deliberate bringing comparisons to Disturbed or WASP. The first single to be released off the disc is a song called Home which is one of the more mellower or radio friendly tunes about Bobaflex touring experiences and I would assume would be coming out any day now.

I have to admit, I'm very impressed with Bobaflex's latest offering. The entire collection illustrates their ability to create relevant meaningful music. The band illustrates and exemplifies their true roots. Its real music addressing real life. The songs echo of hard times amid trials and tribulations. Its a tribute to hard working down beatin blue collar workers from any poor small town but in the language of hard rock music. Bobaflex are self admittedly representing the people of these small Dirt Towns and they are doing a very commendable job of it.
