Baby Elephant - Turn My Teeth Up! Review

Great ideas don't always become great products. I am far from a funkicianado (doesn't funk always make up terms), but Baby Elephant does not match up to early P Funk of Kool & The Gang, and it is not eclectic enough to capitalize on the popularity of Gnarles Barkley. Needless to say, Prince Paul fumbled on this project.Like any legend though, Prince Paul manages some Baby E moments. Getting Shock G to appear automatically makes "Plainfield" a favorite. Anyone who grew up with Digital Underground will appreciate the voice that brought us "The Humpty Dance". Has George Clinton ever hurt a track? When he dies, artists and producers should pull a Tupac with him, and put his vocals on numerous tracks. The most funkalicious track is "Fred Berry", because I couldn't dance to it, but since What's Happening (I even liked …Now) is one of the best shows in the history of American television, I miss the hell out of Rerun, and he would devour that song. He would be a brilliant blur on the dance floor. Turn My Teeth Up! has many tracks that shed a dull light on the world of Funk, and some guest appearances that are downright brutal (see David Byrne), but the inclusion of a couple legends (one in flesh and one in spirit) and a big nose that knows, saves Prince Paul from complete disaster.
