The Only Constant is Change
By Zane Ewton

This two disc compilation is brought together by the creative minds at Volcom Entertainment.  There are 36 rare and unreleased tracks plus 10 more tracks that are just regular.

Volcom touts the compilation as one with “today’s most influential up and coming rock artists, as well as a number of longstanding bands that have shaped and defined the indie scene.”

Volcom embraces its 10 year old motto of “youth against establishment”.  The problem with The Only Constant is Change is that all of these songs sound recycled.  There is nothing new or exciting about the music on this compilation.  Essentially nothing has changed.

The first disc contains fairly straightforward punk songs, sometimes leaning to pop and sometimes to metal.  Pennywise, Authority Zero, Guttermouth and Death by Stereo contribute to the first disc but quickly blend into the crowd.

Disc two is far more varied stylistically, but fails to provide anything that the casual indie fan hasn’t heard.  Beehive and the Barracuda, Arraya and Pistolero chime in with some of the exciting moments.  In fact the first 13 tracks on disc two are listenable, but the remaining nine tracks sound exactly like disc one.

The Only Constant is Change should be intended for the serious fan, someone who is searching for every Pennywise live recording they can find.  Newer fans would be better served with some of the smaller and cheaper label compilations.

Hopefully this is not the current crop of new and rising bands, because they sound just like the old new and rising bands.
