The Tiny - Starring, Someone Like You Review

by Morley Seaver

.
Despite comparisons to Bjork and Kate Bush, The Tiny have a sound that is unique to themselves. Pianist/vocalist Ellekari Larsson, cellist Leo Svensson, and bassist Johan Berthling create an environment that is at once atmospheric and stark. While listening to this record you could imagine sinking into a foam padding mattress, safe and content. For some songs, you could also imagine the flip side, lost alone in a forest; with no present danger but experiencing an almost overwhelming sense of abandonment.

Larsson's voice begs comparisons to the aforementioned singers and she does indeed channel moments of both their sense of whimsy as well as their quirky charm. The sparse arrangements of each song set up an almost storybook setting (you can almost see the cartoon characters saunter by), allowing her voice to fill up the vacuum created by a lack of instrumentation. The songs themselves are sometimes charming; sometimes sobering. Most of all, they're always captivating.
