Pizzasaurus Rex – Traveling Today on Yesterday’s Maps… Review

by Patrick Muldowney

.
Pizzasaurus Rex sounds like a 3AM slice shop in a college town. This is hardly a great name for a band, especially for a band that doesn't play stupid 2-minute punk ditties. To further muddle the message, P Rex compliments its stupid name with a great album title. I'm under the assumption that at some point this was a crappy college punk band, and, as they've evolved musically, a need to be recognized by the old crowd has prevented a name change. This theory is supported by the tracks on Traveling Today on Yesterday's Maps… because the plethora of guitarists (four) love to mute power chords and play cheesy solos and the vocals are off key. On the bright side, P Rex is working toward the sound of early Goo Goo Dolls, although, with the weakness of the vocals, their ceiling is more along the lines of Small (personally, I love Small). "Drown" is a nice rock ballad, although Bruce Springsteen might get pissed that they've patchwork plagiarized the chorus of "The River". Many of the other songs rock, but would likely benefit from a live performance; they lack quality production, which reveals their predictable and ineffective structure. Generally bands who release an album like this have little upside, but P Rex is worth keeping an eye on considering the attempts made on Traveling Today on Yesterday's Maps… Let's just hope that the watchful eye soon finds a headline reading, "The band formerly known as Pizzasaurus Rex…" and "The singer formerly known as Party Nate…"

Tracks added to iPod: Drown
