Jay Bennett - The Magnificent Defeat Review

.
Jay Bennett is a dabbler. So much so, that, at times, he makes Beck sound simple. The Bennett that experiments is much more annoying than The Bennett that rocks though. The Magnificent Defeat reveals a singer who sounds like a variety of others: Tom Petty, Mojo Nixon, Roger McGuinn, and Elvis Costello. Jay Bennett sounds so good singing Costello-like tunes; he would make a suitable replacement if The Attractions ever removed its head. If one is looking for Wilco, this disc will be a sharp departure, yet, once the initial sting dulls, The Magnificent Defeat will prove itself to be a good romp.

Tracks added to Ipod: 5th Grade, The Palace at 4 AM, Replace You
