Birthday Massacre Live

Real Bar in Tempe, AZ - March 2006

.
The Birthday Massacre, as far as I'm aware, isn't known for touring down to their nubs, so I was fortunate enough to catch them live before they dispersed and disappeared forever. Well, at least for a while. There were three opening bands including The Start, but I only got there in time for one since I live 40 minutes away and it was raining here in Phoenix for the first time in 148 days.

After slowly inching my way to the front of the stage throughout The Start's set, I arrived at the front on the left side, which was great because that allowed me to see all of the Birthday Massacre's equipment while a couple members of the band were loading it onto the stage. Getting excited after seeing one of the roadies slap down a set list right in front of me (which is now in my possession), the rest of the band came marching in including Chibi the vocalist and the band's only female, whom, let's be honest guys, was the real reason we were there, right?

The show started a little weird. Chibi was off just a little bit as was Rainbow, one of the lead guitarists, and by the end of the song (which was their current single "Blue") I was hoping it would get better. Fortunately for everyone there, it did.

Thirty minutes into it they were really rocking, and they had breezed flawlessly through "Blue", "Play Dead", "Horror Show", "Nevermind", "Violet" and "Under the Stairs." Then, Chibi announced that they had to cut it short, and they would be playing the last song of the night, which ironically was "Broken." WHAT!? They had played for a total of thirty minutes and they had to quit?? I later found out that it was the Real Bar that told them to cut it short; it wasn't the band's doing. For the record, from what I hear, The Birthday Massacre had an hour show planned, and they felt really bad about having to cut us short like that. That's okay Chibi, we understand. You rocked all night and performed well above and beyond, so all is forgiven. Just come back soon!

On the whole, I was impressed with the overall sound, which was a near perfect replica of their studio effort. I didn't like the venue at all except for the acoustics and the no-smoking law; and I must say whoever was in charge of the place that night, shame on you for making The Birthday Massacre leave early! You my friend are a prick of the lowliest kind.

The opening bands, what I heard of them anyway, were awfully decent and aside from a few technical difficulties, an off-key note here and there, a serious lack of shirts for sale, and the fact that some of the members of The Birthday Massacre had painted gigantic curly moustaches on their faces in tribute to the guitarist from The Start, it was a fine night of music, and if anyone has the chance to catch them live, do what you need to do to see them; you'll be rewarded. Let's just hope your venue is bigger and better than mine.
