Unearth - The Sanctity of Brothers Tour
Chicago's Congress Theater - September 9, 2006

Boston's Unearth came to town on a perfect September evening, and took aim at the faithful who showed up at Chicago's Congress Theater. They did not disappoint.

After scorching sets by openers Through The Eyes of the Dead, Animosity, Terror, and Bleeding Through, Unearth hit the stage and proceeded to unleash one of the most brutal metal sets I've heard in some time. Slamming out of the gate with songs from their latest cd, III-In The Eyes of Fire, Trevor and the guys tore through song after song with relentless passion. As promised prior to heading out on the tour, Unearth mixed up their set from previous nights, as they promised to do throughout the tour. The best example of this, and one that made the crowd (including myself) happy, was the inclusion of "Endless", from their very first EP. So brutal was their set, and the energy throughout, that even those standing towards the back couldn't help but move. Somewhat surprisingly, the crowd was incredibly well-behaved as well, a definite hit or miss at any given metal show. Unearth did a great job of getting the crowd moving, and keeping them into it, throughout their 1 hour set. Highlights of the evening included "Giles", "Black Hearts Now Reign", "The Devil Has Risen", "The Great Dividers", and of course, the tour's namesake "The Sanctity of Brothers".

Also noticeable was the tightness of the band in a live setting. Unearth is an amazing group of musicians, no doubt, but to hear them in a live show, as energetic as they were, moving constantly and interacting with the crowd while not missing a beat was a feat in itself. It is apparent that during every show, the band makes an effort to interact with their fans. They strike the onlooker as a group of guys who are down to earth, and who genuinely care and appreciate that there are people there to watch. They don't take a second of it for granted. What was even better for this show, was Trevor's declaration that the crowd gathered to see the band that night would be hard to beat throughout the rest of the month, even though they were on just their third show of the tour.

If you have the chance to check this show out when it comes to your town, do yourself a favor and go. With ticket prices at a near-giveaway, and such a solid lineup of bands, it would be a mistake not to see this tour. This show easily has the ability to beat out both of the big 'metal' tours that already occurred this year, hands down.
