The Rewinds - The Rewinds Review

by Patrick Muldowney

.
All of us have those bands and those albums that we listen to for fun. Basically, it is good music that puts us in a good place without having to place too much brain power in its listen. The self-titled debut from The Rewinds is that type of album exactly. The album is great, but I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince you they are breaking new ground or enlightening great thinkers because they are solely making great rock music. Personally, my enjoyment of this album is akin to my enjoyment of the first album by The Strokes, although I may prefer this a bit more based on the vocals and their temperance of effects.

"Ghostriders" is the standout song on the album, and is so lively it can be an instant upper on a down day. With its abrupt beats, which leave as quickly as they enter, and the memorable guitar line that alternates two bars at a time with the vocals during the verse, this is a theme song in waiting. It certainly has become worthwhile enough for me to dig out a few times for a 3-minute car ride, especially since it's about finding direction. "Everytime" is another fantastic song, with its jangly southern rock guitar sound during verses where Michael Shackleford coolly finishes off vocal lines after pausing, which makes for a unique melody. This vocal effort shows the Guided By Voices influence.

If you like Southern, Indie, or Alternative Rock with pop awareness, there is no reason not to like the self-titled debut from The Rewinds. In fact, I could make it a bit simpler and say if you like Rock, in general, there is no reason. The only possible issue with this album is that it might get lost or forgotten in your collection after the initial courtship, because it is not as unique as a Replacements or Archers album. Excluding the issue of how important this debut becomes in your long-term collection, it is impossible to put The Rewinds in without enjoying them. Therefore, this is an enthusiastic 3 ½ smiles.
