The Motion Sick - Her Brilliant Fifteen
By

.
With catchy pop rhythms and vocals that blend seamlessly, the Motion Sick have themselves a pretty little record in Her Brilliant Fifteen that should instantly appeal to fans of The New Pornographers, Portastatic, Built to Spill, and bits of Bright Eyes. Hailing from Boston, the Motion Sick have carved out a neat little niche of their own, with help from '60's love ballads, '80s synth-wave bands, and a little creative songwriting.

Musically, the band relies on the good old standby guitar, bass and drums but also mix things up a bit with some brass, as heard in Thundarr, and my favorite, the banjo, as heard in God Hates Kansas, which also boasts some really good "screw off and die" lyrics that tell it as it is. Bass hooks are clean and the percussion is decent, but the flow of the record gets a little muffed in the middle, where some tracks don't seem to flow very well from one to another. However, the production seems pretty tight, and you'll find yourself singing along to a lot of the power pop tracks, especially the opener Satellite. Lyrically, I can't tell if vocalist Michael Epstein sounds more like Conor Obherst from Bright Eyes or Gordon Gano from the Violent Femmes. Regardless of whether or not you believe that to be a good or a bad thing, the Motion Sick really appeals to audiences of all musical tastes and backgrounds and use a fresh mix of indie rock/pop, folk, and a little punk to dress up these eleven tracks quite nicely.
