Melvins - Houdini Live 2005: A Live History of Gluttony and Lust Review

by Paul Rutherford

.
Fans of the Melvins 1994 album Houdini will want to pick this one up. King Buzzo and Dale re-learned the tunes on the album and recorded them live with bassist Trevor Dunn of Buzz's side band Fantomas. The band is ultra-tight, it even sounds heavier than the original album. You get what you expect from the Melvins - Buzzo's mega-dirty grunge-metal riffs and crazy vocal stylings, the amazing drumming of Dale Crover, and Dunn holds his own just fine.

All the songs from Houdini are included. The speedy heaviness of songs like "Cop-Ache" and "Set Me Straight", the bluesy dirge "Lizzie", the weirdness of "Hooch" and "Joan of Arc", and the molasses-slow grunge of most of the rest of the disc.

I give this 3 stars because though it's good, there's no songs that seem to jump off the disc at you as standouts. The closest thing to a "single" would probably be the obscure Kiss cover "Going Blind", and the last track is nearly 13 minutes of aimless noise. Overall though, this is a good heavy recording that especially goes well with weed. Stoner rockers and Melvins fans should enjoy this effort. Creed fans on the other hand, oh hell, you suck anyway.
