Girls Got Rhythm Review

by Zane Ewton

.
With Girls Got Rhythm several all female tribute bands strut, preen and smash through absolute rock classics to various degrees of success. There are thirteen bands that pay tribute to legends like AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, Misfits, Led Zeppelin and the Ramones.

Some bands nail it while others should stick to their day job. Some bands also put some thought into their names, others were just lazy. Here are the thirteen tracks in their entire splendor.

Thundherstruck - "Thunderstruck". The guitars are absolutely spot-on. Probably the best sounding track on the album.

The Iron Maidens - "Run to the Hills". Pretty good musically. Nobody, man or woman, can match Bruce Dickinson's vocals though.

Mistress of Reality - "Fairies Wear Boots". Worst Vocals. Ever.

Cheap Chick - "Surrender". This sounds like it was recorded in a tunnel. Cheap Trick's influence on alternative rock of the female persuasion is unmistakable though.

Black Diamond - "Love Gun". The guitar solo is particularly painful. You probably want to blame Ace for that one.

Ms. Fits - "Last Caress". The original was a shabby recording, this one isn't much better. Take that as a compliment.

Hell's Belles - "Back in Black". Another AC/DC tribute. It would be hard to top the lead-off track but the vocals here sound even more shredded than Brian Johnson's glass gargling howl.

The Little Dolls - "I Don't Know". Nobody can play like Randy Rhoads, and screeching like Ozzy isn't pleasant (i.e. Mistress of Reality). So The Little Dolls focus more on vibe than note for note perfection and do a great job.

Zepparella - "The Lemon Song". Award them points for not picking an expected song; bonus points for getting the Zeppelin vibe perfect. Robert Plant sang like a woman, so this isn't much of a stretch.

Kissexy - "Lick It Up". There is a dude in this band.

Whole Lotta Rosies - "Dog Eat Dog". The third and final AC/DC tribute (is there an AC/DShe? If not, there should be) apes Bon Scott but forgets to add his humor and wit.

Ramonas - "Sheena is a Punk Rocker". Less a spotless Ramones tribute than a band that is just like every other punk band trying to be the Ramones.

Foxey Lady - "Foxey Lady". Not good. Vocalist tries the deep Jimi voice and sounds more like a creepy P.E. teacher than a smoldering rock star.

This album is a fun idea that could be a successful series considering the number of tribute bands. With a little money thrown at these bands for some production many of these bands could really whip up something good. Except the Ms. Fits, they are gloriously under produced.
