Comomusic Anthology 1990-2005 Vol. 1
By Kevin Wierzbicki

This is a double-disc anthology of groups out of Columbia, Missouri. Columbia sits on I-70 about halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City and is a very good place to stop for some barbeque and beer. Or if you prefer to stay a little longer you can stop for an education (and beer) since the city is also the home to the University of Missouri. There’s way too much stuff on here to mention even half of it; but of the 40 bands represented, here’s just a few of the goodies: The Doxies offer up a cool slice of southern rock a la Steve Earle (“High Road”) while Untamed Youth rock the garage like it’s 1966 (“I’ll Be Gone”). Mahjongg are a Como band too, and they’re about to release a new disc on the Cold Crush label. Here they perform “Aluminum,” a keyboard based ditty with an aptly tinny jangle to it. Prozac Memory, Starkweathers and East Ash also have good cuts on disc one. Part two finds Missouri Sex Offenders covering Prince’s “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man” and Trailhead twangin’ it up with “West County;” Eugenics Council uses a girl singer for their snappy techno-pop. Then there’s “Velcro Felines” from Swamp f***. It’s an absolute abomination set to Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” but I just like saying “Swamp f***.” Now here’s the surprise ending to this whole deal---go to the label’s Website and you can download mp3s of about half of these tracks for free.
