Chicago Blues Reunion - Buried Alive in the Blues Review
by Gary Schwind

.
This album was recorded at FitzGerald's in Berwyn, Illinois, in November, 2004. I wasn't there, but I wish I had been there to see this band that includes: Nick Gravenites, Barry Goldberg, Harvey Mandel, Tracy Nelson, Corky Siegel, Sam Lay, Zach Wagner, Rick Reed and Gary Mallaber.

The album begins with "Born in Chicago," which is a good song to get the feet moving and the blood pumping. It is followed by "Buried Alive in the Blues," a song that Nick Gravenites wrote for Janis Joplin. Unfortunately, Joplin died the day before she would have laid down the vocals for the song. Tracy Nelson takes the lead vocals on the third track "Walk Away" and really belts it out. This song alone would have been worth the priced of admission.

Nick Gravenites at times sounds like Eric Clapton and at other times sounds more like Charlie Musselwhite ("Drinking Wine"). In addition to Gravenites and Nelson, there are two other vocalists on this album. Sam Lay provides the vocals for "Find My Baby" and "Hound Dog." Corky Siegel lays down the vocals on "King Bee." I'll tell you one thing, the vocals aren't lacking, no matter who sings on a given track.

This album is full of all the things that make Chicago blues great: big guitars, harmonica, piano and organ. Not to mention, songs about drinking, lost love, Muddy Waters and trucks. If you love the blues, especially Chicago blues, you should have this album.
