Mercurial Mudvayne
by Debbie Seagle

Take heart oh hardcore faithful.  There is more on the horizon to bend your perception and blow your mind.  I’m speaking of course, of the band that first came to our attention while touring with Slipknot and has now recorded a CD on Epic with Slipknot’s Shaun (6) Crahan producing.  I’m speaking of MUDVAYNE.

Their new CD, "L.D. 50" is described by the band as dark, mysterious, savage and unsettling.  They forgot heavy, melodic and trance inducing, but I’ll let you find that out for yourselves.  Explains drummer sPaG, "The term "L.D. 50" is a medical term used by pharmacologists to measure how toxic a substance is.  It stands for Lethal Dose 50, which represents how much of a chemical it takes to kill fifty out of a hundred test subjects."  "The metaphor is that the things that can potentially open your mind, expand your consciousness and show you a new vision of yourself and the world also have a risk involved in them and a consequence.  Its about how far you can push the envelope before it gets dangerous, which is a way we’d like to see our work perceived as well.

Out on a mission to take over the world by penetrating your skin, sinking into your core and infiltrating their way back out, MUDVAYNE possesses a hardcore groove with hypnotic rhythms and the bite of a cobra.  Visually, they are a site you will not soon forget, especially if you are lucky enough to see a live performance.  My first encounter with the band was on the spring Slipknot tour, when I was standing off stage left, watching another band.  I was concentrating on the band on stage and became aware of someone standing behind me, talking with a group of people.  I turned and almost gasped as bassist "Ryknow" stood there with glistening yellow eyes and devil horns protruding from his head.  Similarly, the rest of the band are about bending reality and breaking the confines of normalcy.  Vocalist "Kud" sports a four foot long beard that he wears braided and swings like a strippers pasties.  Guitarist "Gurrg" and Drummer "sPaG" are similarly "original" and unusual in their hallucinatory makeup and they are determined to use this intensity to f*** with your head (and succeed).

Besides the solid musicianship and expressive vocals on this CD, it also sports some killer effects and sampling.  This is best showcased on the CD’s first track, "Monolith," which is one of the tracks that possess a futuristic, almost industrial flavor.  Each of the additional 16 tracks possess a variety of different vibes, vocal styles and rhythmic qualities.  Its sure to make a welcome addition to any hardcore fan’s CD collection.
